Mixing and Mastering for $50
I was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, studied in the acclaimed Colégio Bandeirantes, and currently hoping to enter college in the United States for a more prestigious education in Music Technology, Sound Engineering, and Music Production. Being so fascinated with young artists in the music industry, I started to mess around with music at 15 years old and began to learn about DAWs, music production, mixing, and mastering. After some years of learning through the internet and making songs, I enrolled in a music technology course in one of the top schools of music in Brazil. There I was schooled a lot of the industry ways in music production and sound engineering. Having graduated from that school, I have been interested in mixing, mastering, and producing for other artists.
As I am just beginning this line of work, I don't possess any analog gear but only digital gear. I started out messing with FL Studio and Pro Tools but I ended up transitioning myself to Logic Pro X. I use a lot of plugins to make my mix and master, such as the Fabfilter Bundle, Izotope Ozone 9, Logic stock plugins, H-Delay, Soothe... For me, each song has its own process, but it is always important first to check with the artist what is his vision and imagination. After taking careful listening to the track, I level each stem to my and the client's likeness, pan each track, and also make sure the song it's not clipping. Then, I usually start the EQ process. First, I EQ the drums, since most of the time the drumbeat is what moves the track, after that I EQ the bass, then the chords, leads, FXs, and vocals for last. Once I have everything EQ'd and removed any unwanted frequencies, I start compressing each track, in the same order as I EQ'd. After finishing that, I mess around with some effects such as Delay, Reverb, Saturation, Filtering, Modulation, Distortion, and Imaging. When the mixing is finished, I start comparing the product with a reference song from the client's preference and tweak some things until I feel like it's good. For the mastering, I put a Fabfilter L-2 on the Master track and some other plugins such as Soothe, a little bit of EQ'ing, and a metering plugin after the limiter to check the loudness of the track.
