I have decades of drumming experience. Rush/Neil Peart was my inspiration for pursuing the instrument, but as a lifelong student of the instrument, I am influenced by countless other drummers and musicians. I can play rock, metal, country, jazz, and more.
I graduated from The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences at the top of my class in the late 90s, so I am formally educated in audio production. I always had "normal day jobs," so I never pursued music full-time. So while I have many capabilities and tons of experience, I don't have many credits. Let's change that.
I am comfortable on a 4-piece kit, but I have a 7-peice kit. It was custom built by DW to my specifications. The toms are 8" 10" 12" 14" and 16". The snare is a "standard" size 6.5"x14", and the kick is a 22".
I have an excellent collection of top line cymbals. I have a 22" Sabian Paragon ride, a 20" Zildjian Earth ride, 13" Paiste Signature hi hats, an 18" Sabian china, and a mix of crash cymbals, either Paiste Signatures or Sabian Paragons all.
Other toys include old broken cymbals, wind chimes, shakers, a 13" Sonor piccolo snare, and more.
I have a Roland SPD-SX PRO for triggered percussion and sampled sounds.
Microphones include Shure SM57s, Audix D6 (permanently mounted in kick), Audix Micro HP (all permanently mounted inside the toms with the May internal mic systems). For overheads, I use either Rode NT-2s or Rode NT-5s.
I use Presonus Studio One, and I have 16 total inputs. 8 are from a Presonus Studio 192, and the other 8 from a MOTU 8pre.
I can make anything happen with it all. If you want a retro 70's vibe, I could, in theory, put on Calftone or Fiberskin drum heads, pare down to a 4-peice, use only 4 mics on the kit, and you'd have it.
On the flip side, keep all the drums, keep all the clear Emperor drum heads, close mic everything, including inside snare, hat, and ride, and you can have a more progressive feel to the project. Another variation could be tightly tuned drums all around for a more Stuart Copeland/Neil Peart thing, or tuned lower for a more popular, fat sound, like Journey or Bon Jovi (or any contemporary country).
If it were classic country (Jonny Cash, for example), the first method would be great, but either would work. Contemporary country (Jason Aldean) would be the latter, because it's basically arena rock sung with a twang. The point is, I'm happy to accommodate, and I can deliver many different types of musical products.
