Hello, my name is Alex McMahon. I live in Albuquerque New Mexico and have played music professionally for over 10 years. I have recorded and toured in 'The Handsome Family' since 2015 and have released 3 albums with my band 'The Gral Brothers' while also recording remotely on many albums and projects both here in the US as well as abroad. One of my biggest joysis giving songs dimension and depth, allowing lyrics a chance to become microcosms for the lister to get lost in.

My main instrument is guitar and pedal steel guitar. I also love using vintage portasound keyboards, samplers and almost anything that can run off batteries. My general aesthetic for tone falls left-of-center and offers texture that stands on its own while giving recordings life and a little something extra for those listening with headphones. I have always been most moved by the vulnerability in 'lo-fi' music and the way mood becomes archetypal and euphoric.

I have a relatively basic recording setup at home, I have used Cubase for years and have a Universal Audio interface. My interest lies more in funky old mics, smaller amps and unconventional ways of creating and capturing sounds. I try to retain a workflow that resembles stream-of-consciousness where I follow my initial instincts and react to the song in a way that is organic and thoughtful.

Typically when I work remotely I tend to record 2-3 entire passes of a song and send all of my overdubs intact and without any severe editing or automation on my end. But, depending on what the client has in mind, that is certainly flexible and I am definitely open to trying things out of my regular approach.
