John Lake is a trumpet player and composer living in New York City, who maintains a busy performance schedule as a jazz soloist, as well as an being in-demand lead trumpet player. Recent large-ensemble performances include lead and section trumpet with Michael Feinstein & Tedd Firth at Jazz At Lincoln Center, the Ben Markley Big Band, the Fat Cat Big Band, the David Berger Jazz Orchestra, Charlie Rosen’s Broadway Big Band, Brian Krock’s Big Heart Machine, the Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, the Steven Feifke Big Band, the Terazza 7 Big Band, as well as John's own collaborative big band, the New Alchemy Jazz Orchestra, which currently enjoys a monthly residency at The Django in Manhattan.
In the world of popular music and theater, John’s diverse musical talents have afforded him opportunities to perform and record with artists such as Escort, Mac Miller, Marin Mazzie, Josh Groban, Chairlift, Kristin Chenoweth, Jon Lithgow, and David Hyde Pierce. John also composes and arranges original music for his own acoustic jazz septet, The John Lake Ensemble. His compositions and arrangements have been featured by the small and large ensembles of New York University, University of Wyoming, University of Colorado, Ithaca College, Celebrity Cruises, and many more.
Originally from northwestern Ohio, Lake holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music from the University of Colorado at Boulder. John has continued his academic interests into his professional career, and has recently written for DownBeat magazine’s Woodshed section.
John plays and endorses XO Brass trumpets and flugelhorns.
