Paul Barclay’s journey in music production and engineering started by working alongside and engaging stalwarts in reggae music such as Glen & Noel Browne, Errol Brown, Rudy Valentino, Solgy Hamilton, Chris Daley, Rory Baker and well known friend and associate Rohan Dwyer from whom he would have benefited the most.
A Jamaican ‘to the bone’, Paul’s dedication and commitment to excellence and the upliftment of the human spirit through the language and consciousness of reggae music, is highlighted in the very approach he took in ensuring that his first major musical project had the ability to leave an indelible mark on the minds of many. The chart toping single ‘NO Power on Earth’ by George Nooks which he wrote and produced.
The role of producer and engineer seem to be an umbilical link when you are the owner of a digital recording studio. Katsjam Records now Katalys Crew Production was Paul's home based recording studio.
Paul has engineered, mixed and mastered a number of notable projects for over twenty years. Aside from Katalys Crew, the band he founded, Paul had an illustrious stint with the JCDC where for 5 years he managed and produced (including engineering) six consecutive winning festival songs.
The Katalys Crew brand of reggae is a distinctive sound that revolutionized some would say dominated the gospel music scene from 2000 to 2006. This distinctive sound that was carefully harnessed by Paul Barclay and the team has inspired a generation of young touring musicians.
In 2008 Cant Stop Now a song that Paul co-wrote, produced and mixed got the award for Best Gospel Song in the first staging of the Reggae Academy Awards the precursor to the JaRIA Honor Awards.
Among other things, Paul holds a diploma in Entertainment Management, served on the board of JaRIA for over 10 years, a past member of the board at The Record Industry Association of Jamaica, where he served on the steering committee that was eventually responsible for the birth of JAMMS (The Jamaica Music Society), also former member of the steering committee for gospel at the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission. Paul was instrumental in the formation of and a founding board member of the JGMN, (Jamaica Gospel Music Network).
In 2012 after being a member of the board of directors at JACAP for over 10 years Paul was appointed Chairman and held that post for 3 consecutive terms.
