I have played many different styles over the years! I have been playing for a total of 40 years! I have currently, over the past ten years, been focusing my personal musical interests in acoustic finger style instrumental composing. I have gone through many stages in my evolution. I had started off playing only acoustic solo guitar, and have now become infatuated with avante garde, free jazz, smooth jazz, and the fusion realm, where I now enjoy hearing different instrumentation with my guitar compositions to create a more colorful sound. I am a connoisseur of the ECM jazz label(Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny, Egberto Gismonti, Bill Connors, Eberhard Weber, etc.).
During my early days in my formative years, it was folk music, Celtic, country, Beatles, Beach Boys, hymns, classical, rock, hard rock, power metal, speed metal, thrash, and death metal! Then suddenly, a transformation occurred within! I became a Windham Hill fanatic (Michael Hedges, Alex Degrassi, Will Ackerman), and found peace in music that literally gives me peace and calmness!
Alternate tunings anyone?! Andy Mckee/Hedges style?! Shred guitar ala Malmsteen, Vai? Modal playing? Aavante garde , free jazz?! I can't forget! Who would like to learn how to just let go and improvise?!!! This is a passion I had studied my entire musical career!
The compositions of John Tinger are difficult to fit into any genre! Here are how others describe him.
“The music of John Tinger combines textural beauty with a strong melodic sense to create something entirely new & fresh.” — Ken Watters / Jazz Trumpeter / Summit Recording Artist, reverb nation
“John is a spectacular guitarist and visionary writer. His music is deeply introspective and reflects the soul of a true artist.” — Peter Primamore Managing Partner, Organic Music Library, http://www.organicmusiclibrary.com
“To me, the beauty of John Tinger's music lies in its visual depth, the wisdom of its texture. Each piece is a world in its own right, evoking wide open spaces, enchanted gardens, eternal waters, from which emerges the brilliant, urging voice of a seasoned storyteller. John has become an inspiration to my work as a filmmaker.” — Christoph Silber, German-American screenwriter and filmmaker
