Saxophonist Hunter Smith is a fiery and dedicated player with a large sound and a passion for music. A Nashville, TN native Hunter studied Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville under Gregory Tardy and was named the outstanding graduate for the program in 2016. At UTK he was the lead saxophone in the big band for 3 years. Immediately after graduating Hunter moved to Boston, MA and earned his M.M. in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2018. During his time in Boston he was able to study with many legendary musicians including Jerry Bergonzi, Mark Turner, Donny McCaslin, Miguel Zenon, Jason Moran, and Dave Holland. He played 1st tenor in the NEC Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Ken Schaphorst both of his years there. During all his years of education, Hunter was also making his way as a working musician in each city he’s lived.
After graduating from NEC Hunter moved to New York City to explore the world’s premier jazz scene. He played various gigs across the city as a bandleader and sideman. He also had the opportunity to record in the legendary Bunker Studios in Brooklyn. In 2019 Hunter moved back to Nashville – excited to pursue music and bring the cutting edge of the scene back to his hometown.
Currently, Hunter tours with Grand Ole Opry Member and Grammy nominated country artist Jamey Johnson playing Baritone and Alto saxophones. When not on the road Hunter performs a variety of work ranging from rock/pop Broadway gigs at venues such as the 1230 Club or Whiskey River, to jazz shows at Rudy’s Jazz Room, and weddings/private events. He has also found consistent work with a home studio being able to overdub saxes for anyone, anywhere. Hunter Smith has proven himself over the years to be a hardworking and versatile musician who makes himself an indispensable part of any project.
