Eclectic and heavily instinctive self-taught musician, Nashville-born Joe Lewis is a live and studio performer best known to thrive on the energy of genuine American music -Blues, Funk, Soul, R&B, Rock...- Yet he also cherishes exploring creative & improvised music, from Jazz to ethnic & folk fusions and more, in any format from ensemble to duet... Joe brings a rock edge, world groove and creative energy to any genre/style, whether it's for live or recording situations.
He's had classes with legends such as Carol Kaye, Charles "Buster" Williams, Carles Benavent, Jorge Pardo, Gary Willis, Javier Colina, Victor Merlo and ASL. As bass player and backing vocalist, he's worked on over 40 independently-released recordings, including Cece Giannotti’s Pivot Point CD and DVD (Best Jazz album AMJM, 2010) and Victor Bocanegra’s Fonografies (finalist AMJM Jazz awards 2008). Joe has also composed for TV, advertising, short and recorded on feature films such as Magic Journey to Africa. A seasoned club and festival player, he's toured around Europe and Spain with projects and artists including Clarence Bekker, Monica Green, 08001, Joan Vinyals, Sunstation, Tori Sparks and Sora, among others.
On the side, he has published articles in Bass Player Magazine and Total Guitar (Spain), among others, and co-wrote an instructional book for bass students in Spanish Principios Básicos del Bajo Eléctrico (Carisch). Currently exploring the archive and preparing new material for an upcoming solo release, Joe still collaborates regularly with local artists and projects, performing live and on recording sessions.
