My knowledge and experience with the instruments of the rhythm section allows me the insight to make them all work seamlessly and with a finessed groove.
I performed with Wrecking Crew alumni Hal Blaine and Steve Douglas in The Steve Douglas band playing acoustic and electric percussion and keyboards.
I've played drums on a number of motion picture soundtracks including Unbearable Lightness of Being (dir. Philip Kaufman), Eat A Bowl of Tea (dir. Wayne Wang), Tucker (dir. George Lucas), Hearts of Darkness; A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (dir. Francis Ford Coppola). La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead.

What people are saying about Reid:
I have been working with Reid Whatley for over ten years now in a variety of environments, including live performances as well as collaborative studio work for numerous clients. Reid has always worked at a high level at both musicianship (as a drummer/percussionist and acoustic bassist) as well as technical proficiency in a digital studio. He is one of my favorite drummers, displaying advanced and engaging stylistic playing. I have often sought out Reid's direction in terms of Pro Tools knowledge, and his abilities with the DAW have always impressed me. Reid has a vast knowledge in multiple aspects of the musical realm, and is a valuable asset to any production team. -C. Day
It is my privilege to write a review and recommendation for the very talented Reid Whatley. I have had the opportunity to work with Reid for twenty years in various capacities and I can enthusiastically vouch for Reid's talent, professionalism and good humor in every setting, be it live performance, recording, or rehearsal. Reid always delivers the goods with the talent and high standards to which he holds himself and concomitantly expects of others. These high standards have continually resulted in successful performances in the recording studio, on the bandstand, and rehearsing in the woodshed. Reid is adept at many styles of music and I have retained Reid to perform on everything from jazz, rock, pop, folk, and country music among others. Reid performs each with authenticity and respect for the genre.
I first met Reid in 2003 when he co-led the jam session at Kelly's of Alameda, a belated but sadly missed local jazz club. Reid was adept at coaxing the musicians sitting in at the jam session to reach within themselves and deliver their best possible performances. He did this with class, aplomb, and the aforementioned good humor.
Reid and I shared a common musical experience in our musical past having each worked with a storied group of studio musicians. In Reid's case he had the good fortune of working with drummer Hal Blaine, one of the world's most storied and most recorded studio musicians. This experience no doubt helped Reid become one of the Bay Area's most dependable musicians in the recording studio. Reid consistently delivers the goods on drums, bass, and keyboards. Reid also brings to the table a polished sense of humor which makes Reid a pleasure to work with even when the setting is challenging.
I have used Reid's talents effectively on numerous occasions, both in the recording studio and in live performances. I would not hesitate to recommend Reid on drums and percussion, bass (both electric and upright), or keyboards, whether it be in the recording studio or in live performance. -T. Douvan
